A rough, stony surface means the asphalt binder is wearing away.
As the binder at the surface ages and erodes, aggregate becomes more visible and can eventually loosen from the pavement.
Request a Pavement AssessmentWhat rough, exposed aggregate can mean.
This condition is sometimes called raveling. Weather, oxidation, drainage, traffic, or problems with the original asphalt mix can contribute. The rate and depth of material loss matter more than color alone.
What to look for
- A coarse surface with individual stones clearly exposed
- Loose grit or aggregate collecting along pavement edges
- Small pits that gradually grow deeper or join together
